In a tank with only two fish in male and female obviously it is possible tell the gender only when it is in breeding condition the male develops white spots over the gills and front fins which is often mistaken for white spot disease which occurs all over. The females abdomen looks like it is swollen from looken down from the tank. Place the fish in the tank settle them down and wait till breeding starts which starts by the fishes chases each other consently then you will see the fishes rubbing againest each other which is the breeding process. You will need plants though so that the eggs can be hatched on the plants to aviod the eggs being eaten separate the adult fish to the eggs with a sheet of glass and divide the tank in half with the adults and the eggs in different sections. Wait till the fish are appropriate size then the fish can be together. In the wild goldfish eggs usually get washed away by the river some will get eaten by adult fish some will not that is the natural process but in tanks this can not happen so this is why you have to divide the tank.

goldfish are hard to breed. Guppies and Mollies are so easy though. YOu just put a male and femle in the tank, and its guarenteed to have babies. they are live-bearers so no eggs. I have had mollies and guppies and ended up with a lot of baby fish
