Good question.
I understand the 'carpetless' for the obvious hygiene reasons, but the 'large' and 'echoey' bit drives me nuts. It's probably just me being neurotic, but no matter how desperate I am for a pee, when there is anyone else in the ladies loos who can possibly hear what I'm doing I get stage fright and completely seize up - a bit like a car that won't start.
Does this affect men too? I thought they were a bit more relaxed about these things. Do tell :-)

Toilets are usually near a sink (and a shower or bath!) All of these things generate excess water. This would be bad for a carpet, which would encourage mold and bacterial growth. The best flooring would be a hard, flat surface that is easy to clean and doesn't retain moisture.
Most residential bathrooms contain showers or baths. These generate lots of steam or vapor moisture, which will warp hardwood walls over time, so a paint, tile or stone surface is much more hardy over time.
Public or commercial bathrooms need to have quickly cleanable surfaces, and again, tile and stone are the best here.
Unfortunately, the only way to prevent embarassment from, shall we say, "giving a farthing", is to eat well, and close the door, so that you are less likely to be connected with any specific "biological events".

Carpetless makes sense since they are prone to overflowing and clean up is easier. As for the echo, once they invent a silent flushing system will solve that problem.

It is to scare little children (and susceptible adults) and givem the creeps so that they have a little excitement in their lives. The sound of footsteps reverberating and creaky door hinges that need oiling and doors that will not shut properly are always good ambiance as well. So that when you finally get to the door and the warmth of the rest of the building hits you with it's colors and sounds makes you glad to be in a place that might not be all that pleasant, but that you were peeing at the gates of hell, it looks good by comparison.

it's carpetless because it's a lot easier to clean (can you just imagine the mess you'll make when you have Diarrhea! :)). it's large and echoey (of course it echoes when it's large and carpetless) to make you relax (enough breathing space) and concentrate on what you will be doing.

Because they are the easiest to clean, the hardest to destroy (Graffiti and Poo-Smearing) and that "echo effect" makes you want to get your "business" over with quickly.......
It does doesn't it?!
Your home bathroom is too comfortable...you sit back, relax, and grab a magazine.....might even play a game or two. Ponder the day's events because you have allllllll the time in the world to take care of "business".

Ever mopped a carpet?
can you even imagine a back-up toilet spilled all over your carpet?

You are so western-minded!!
Usually it is done so in the west so it can be cleaned easily.
In the East, in many small villages - the toilet redirect your output directly to the pigs, so the recycling is complet :)

Maybe it's for the air circulation so the toilet won't stink that badly.
