Your question is excellent, but I don't know if I have an excellent answer to it.

It's true what you wrote that our successes and failures in life do tell us something about our character - this is definitely true.

Perhaps, I am being too hard on myself, but I consider myself a failure. I wanted to get married and have a family - I did not succeed in doing that - which really is quite a normal thing that almost everyone succeeds in doing, but not me. I attribute my failure to shyness and low self esteem.

I also have failed in the professional realm. I should have been a professional of some sort because I graduated with a B.A. in English and then I went to social work school, but I dropped out. Perhaps I could have been an editor in the publishing field or something creative in the advertising field because I love words, books and I love to write. Instead I became a secretary and now I work as a typist - both boring, low level jobs. I attribute this failure to lack of confidence in my abilities and fear of responsibility.

I feel now at my age (53), it is too late to change anything, but I try to improve my social life (new activities and making new friends) and my hobby is writing poetry which takes the place of a fulfilling professional role.

Success & failure are subjective feelings about what one accomplishes (or doesn't). One could look at getting up in the morning as a success, but if one had tried to commit suicide the night before, it would be a failure.
Most all of our actions are based solely on biological impulses. We have the ability though, to dress them up and show them off. Go figure...

Success tells someonelse has failed. Failure says somebody else has won. So everytime someone is winning. What if a win-win situation for all exist. A world with no sorrow, IMPOSSIBLE! So, be good to everyone, that is what is required from you.

only you can know what it tells you about your character. what it can also tell you, is if you are going in the wrong direction in life generally. continual failure in one aspect, usually means you need to rethink, and change that direction or just the attitude with which you approach it. but again, only you can know what those successes and failures mean.
it is an individual experience.

Success followed by failure only confirms the fickleness of success itself. We must accept success and failure with equanimity. Neither go over board in the face of success nor be distraught by the adversity and failure.

...achievement or non-achievement of achieving brings success or failure in life.As I am in the midst of my life, so I have tasted both & now, I have become, to some extend, philosophical;so, I don't want to achieve anything.

It is not a smooth road, it is full of bumps and craters as well. Be yourself and poised, whatever the situation be. :)
