I think we are all victims of the media hype. Because there was one really serious attack, the mass media is running around like a pack of wolves looking for others and blowing them up. The Mass Media's life relies on stirring up sensational paranoia. I wish it would focus more on happy stories. They are great news too.
It is a fact that watching the news damages your health. Should be a warning on every frontpage of the paper and every T.V. news programme, like on packets of cigarettes.
As for the dogs - the owners are to blame, not the dogs. The dogs do what they are trained to do and people who own them and supposedly train them are responsible in every way for their dogs and are especially responsible for their family members' safety..
If any dog attacks any human or other pet, it has either not be trained properly or the owner hasn't taken the sensible precautions. Such dogs should be put into special care. Their previous training should be undone as far as possible, and their positive attributes might find them a home where they can be really useful. They shouldn't be put down, as they didn't know they were doing anything wrong.
The owners however should be banned from keeping other pets. The fact that their child or pet was mauled or killed is more than enough punishment. A big price to pay for their irresponsibility. But banning them from further ownership will prevent the situation from recurring.

Because the media are now looking out for them. They happen everyday but then you get a tragic one as we have just had and the press go on a witch hunt.
No dog is 100% safe be it a Rottweiler or a Poodle. Most of the time it is down to the owner and lack of training, though occassionally there can be a mental problem with the dog, in breeding etc. One has to look at the circumstances behing the attack. Young children should not be left alone with a dog, maybe they have hurt the dog unwittingly, and the dogs first reaction is to bite. I know, it happened to me as a child I remember playing with a doctors set with our dog, I was four at the time, I pinched his ear with some tweasers he yellped and snapped, it was my fault.

A couple of years ago the same thing happened.... I appears that the level of dogs attacking hasn't just shot up... it's just that they have suddenly become a focus of media attention again. I've got two dogs.. one is a staffy one a bichon frise ( yes a weird combination, but they get on great)... I wouldn't leave either of them alone with a toddler... both of them I love dearly, and would hate to think of as dangerous. But in truth, all dogs have the potential for aggression. If you are the owner of a dog, then you must never put complacency over your dog's behavior before the safety of a child.

Just an unhappy coincidence in terms of timing I think. So so sad for the poor families. We recently went to the animal shelter and looked at the dogs, we ended up with a kitty, lots of the dogs were rotweiller types and looked ferocious and you could see why they might be there, it was a very sad place to visit. My friends as a child had 2 springer spaniels and one bit their son and they had him put down immediately as they couldnt trust him after that. So it's not necessarilly a breed thing, springers aren't typically violent. I think it can be the owners fault, and big dogs just need to be constantly watched and never left alone with a child becasue you can just never tell.

There are probably people attacked every day by dogs but we only seem to hear about the "dangerous" dogs , i say the owners have to be held responsible for their dogs 100% , we owned a Rottweiler from puppyhood til she was put to sleep at the grand old age of 13 due to illness but she was a pet , totally spoiled and she would have licked you to death , in all those years she NEVER did anything to anybody infact she was scared of the cat , but i know some people get these dogs to make them look "cool" , its not cool at all and its unfair on the dog to make it vicious and those are the owners that need the book thrown at them . I personally love rottweilers but it is their instinct to defend , some just need to look at you and thats enough you sht yourself . These dogs were originally only used as guard dogs because of their dominance but we are seeing alot more as pets now . I dont know what could be done as a safety measure because all dogs have another side not just the rottie ..
Kids need to be watched very closely around dogs in the home as kids can be cruel too , we have a golden lab now another big softy but my 4yr old can be a torment by jumping on him etc pulling his ears and she gets smacked for this for her own safety you can`t always blame the dogs .. Most cases they are probably being tormented apart from that poor 5 month baby girl .
Dogs hearing is seven more sensitive to ours and maybe if that little baby was crying it maybe drove them crazy , i am NOT making excuses at all for those dogs but we must keep on top of every situation in the home / garden and never leave ANY kids unattended even with the cutest furball , we cannot trust any animals 100% and we owe to our kids to protect them 200% .

There was another one on the 9am news this morning....14 month old attacked.
I cant understand why people have a dog when they have babies....it's known that the animals get jealous of the child and then attack them....
I must confess I am bias as i am terrified of dogs although my little girl thinks every dog is nice and will try and stroke them....even though i try and warn her about the dangers..
Yes, if a dog does attack they should be put down........sorry to all you dog lovers out there....

I think dog owners have an undeniable responsibility of making sure their dogs don't hurt anymore. If they break this rule, they should be put down. They are not harmless family pets but dangerous animals. If your sweet teenaged daughter commits a horrendous crime, you can't stop the police arresting her by saying "oh, she's one of the family." The same goes for a dog.

Its just that these cases are in the media and the fact the the first child died. Dogs attack people all the time but its not every day that 2 Rottwiellers attack and kill a baby

the amount of attacks is probably the same. The media have probably just seen an easy way to grab the publics attention in a bid for ratings.
