for some people, yes, but not for everybody

we are all individuals so we are going to relate to some parts of a book but not others

we are all at different stages of our "journey" through life, so we have different needs at different times

another potential problem with books is that they may limit our options to following a set of "one size fits alll" steps or rules. This may be just a "quick fix" when we are actually seeking a significant change in our lives

books can tell us things "in theory" and this may be useful, but we also need to have experiences with real people

Yes, but you have to pick the book which is RIGHT FOR YOU. The books in the genre tell you theories and author's opinions, based usually on their experiences. Some will make perfect sense to you, others will seem like a load of rubbish.

I have read self-help books before and some have been very inspiring and illuminating. I put their advice into practice, and really did help myself.

I read others and thought they were a load of rubbish. They were lazily written and researched, and were full of all sorts of cranky 'suggestions' and exercises.

If it makes sense to YOU, buy it. A self help book will only be useful to you if it RESONATES WITH YOU.

My advice would be to stick to the trail-blazers (see sources) and avoid the cheap imitations.

They can provide a guide but the ultimate desire to change and the efforts made are ultimately coming from the individual. Can anyone learn from books...? (Isn't that why we're issued books in schools?)

UNFORTUNATELY, there are indeed self-help books and there are SCAMS (how to become rich books are notorious for being scams, like those real estate books... the authors are all making money from the books and CD and cassettes, NOT from the "information" they sell... and they are NOT moguls as they should be if the information they promote were all that easy and truthful). HOW can you tell the difference? If it sounds too easy, if it sounds like there are too many "smart saying" slogans, avoid it. IF these methods were indeed so truthful and so darn easy... why aren't they taught by bona fide professors in schools and college for free? And why aren't the authors making billions of dollars doing what they promote in those books and cassettes instead of making a few hundreds of thousands of dollars every year?

Practical written advice can be as effective as the most expensive help you can find because the two ways to improve your life are:

1. do something different
2. think something different

AND WRITTEN MATERIAL can help you accomplish both of those. All you need is a little motivation, and a book can furnish you with that too.

Yes they do but you need to be disciplined enough to follow through with the advise which is given in them for it to work. Most people think the books are like magic.. you read them & you automatically get better.

As has been already stated, for some people, yes, for others, no.

However. Personally, they have been very useful as they helped me to reach the top shelf and get it dusted, and for that bit of self-help, I'm truly grateful.

Sash.
