I find that sheep are best to poke with sticks as they have a natural predisposition to act favourably to the actionafter the great Sidcup Stick War of 1915.
You see in the spring of 1915 a tribe of deadly grey sheep from Yorkshire tried to invade the fields of Lankashire. The Lankashire sheep where clearly outnumberd and at a disadvantage in terms of fighting skill. However, as we all no sheep have a natural inclination to fight to the last no matter the odds so long as their terretory is under threat. This began to lead to an absolute masacre of the Lancashire sheep at the hands of the well kitted out grey sheep. Bear in mind this was spring and mos of their fighting forces where only bewildered lambs.
But then along came the cavelry (actually mice mounted on the backs of voles) all wielding mighty sticks (sources differ but they where almost certainly made of yew or ash). They began poking the Lankashire sheep with great zeal forcing them to back away and retreat, and causing terror among the grey sheep.
If the sheep hadnt been poked back with sticks it is more than liekly that not one of those cuddley little lambs would have survived.
and that is why sheep apreciate the poking to this day.
