Dark Water- My impression is that the mother gave her life to put Mitsuko's ghost to rest to protect her own daughter, and either she had to stay there and act as mother to keep Mitsuko's ghost from going after her own daughter again, or anyone elses', or...she never really got the chance to tell her daughter how much she loved her and say goodbye properly, and so her ghost lingered on till her daughter came to visit and she finally got the chance.

From what I remember the dead little ghost girl was so evil she was willing to take the mother (Jennifer Connoly) away from her own daughter. The dead girl threatened to kill Connoly's daughter so the only was to save her child was to become a ghost (sort of) mother to the dead girl and be with her forever.
She therefore only existed within the confines of the apartment block and said goodbye to her own daughter in the lift as she left her forever to be with her estrained father.
Sorry if that's a bit vague, I haven't seen the film recently!
Quite a depressing ending in my opinion, but a good film nonetheless.

The mother gave up her life to be the mother to the dead girl because no one in the ghosts life wanted or cared for her. The girl who lived went to live with her dad but knew her mum would always be there for her any time she need her because she tired her hair how she liked it in the lift before she left the building.

the mum give her life up to save her daughter who was being drown in the bath by the dead girl when the mother dies she becomes the mother of the dead girl because the dead girls parents never cared for her and all she wanted was a mum or some one to love her.
