Nationalism never helped anyone! Nationalism is an outdated form of prejudice, left over from the 20th century.

Internationalism, an outward-looking attitude and taking advantage of thhe desire of advanced countries for cheap labour & especially educated labour is much more effective for development. Look at Bangkok and Bangalore.

The best thing the Philippines has done for its economy is to honour the Filipinas working abroad as servants of their country because of the remittances they send home. Remittances are one of the very best sources of development becasue they go to ordinary people & don't get squandered by politicians on prestige projects and corruption. Low-budget tourism is similarly beneficial because ice-cream sellers and owners of cafes and rooms-for-rent keep and spend the profits from what they sell the tourists. (High budget tourism is not nearly as good because it takes capital to build big hotels and the owners are therefore mostly people back in the rich countries. And most of the income profits go to tour operators like Neckermann, Thomson, Thomas Cook, and their competitors.)
