I just heard another version of Cat Stevens's 'Father and Son' in the grocery store- hasn't it been done enough times? How many other songs have been covered lots of times? Which do you think is better, the original or the cover?

I've actually came across this bit of trivia several times in reading about popular songs.
The one song most recorded or covered by most artists is The Long And Winding Road which was written by the Beatles' Paul McCartney of course.
Its sentimental and makes one feel sorry about a lost love. Things that makes a song go over since it helps one to feel sorry for one's self are very, very popular. People love to feel sorry for themselves!!!

Most Recorded Song
The most recorded song is "Yesterday" written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. From 1965 to January 1, 1986 some 1,600 versions of the song were made. The song was first recorded in June 1965 and released that August on the Help! album. It has been covered by artists such Elvis Presley, Boyz II Men, Frank Sinatra, James Brown, and Gladys Knight. The song reportedly came to McCartney in a dream. He woke up, went to the piano, turned on the tape recorder, and played the song. He then spent the next few weeks trying to figure out whether he'd heard the song before or just made it up in his sleep!

I have heard a lot of covers over time. Two covers I'm digging on right now is Disturbed's version of "Land Of Confusion" and that group with Scott Welliand on vocals-it's NOT Velvet Revolver-but they do a pretty good cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender".

I think two songs that have been covered a gazillion times are two Beatle songs-"Yesterday" and "Something".I have never heard a cover of either one of those but they say nothing beats the original

There is a whole cd of different versions of Neil Young's Hurricane. The only cover better than the original that I can think of is Willie Nelsons Crazy by Patsy Cline.
