Free for what?

I don't work for free, but I give up my time for free to my partner.

Yeah we are;

We are free to make the choices we want to make, but we must bear the consequences of those choices

We are free to choose our friends n partners but we must live with them

We are free to say n act like we want but we will be on the receiving end of the reciprocal actions

So are we free? Yes we are, in so much as we don't infringe on the personal rights of others; but we must bear the consequences of our actions as a result of that freedom.

In some ways we are... we have free will, for example. But once we make a decision, much of our freedom is lost. For example, we decide to take a job (our free will)... and then we are "locked in" to the demands of the position and the time that we devote to it; we may not be free to express our viewpoints at the workplace, and we certainly aren't free to come and go as we please.

the human being is, in my opinion, always "free" in the ontological sense. regardless of any decisions, partnerships, or anything else you make, the crux of human existence is that at any point, we are totally free to do... anything. this concept transcends any amount of coercion, "commitment", or any other type of things that we THINK keeps us from true freedom. The example Soren Kierkegaard uses for this concept is that a man walking down a narrow mountain pass suddenly comes to the realization that he could, if he wanted to, at any point throw himself off the side. the feeling of aimlessness and confusion over this, and the anxiety that results, is the source of existential "angst".
