this is because, in order to the substrate to be able to transport through the cell membrane, it must be in a certain size, which should not be big... that's why... as starch are considerably big compared to glucose, it has to and must be digested into glucose...

Starch is a polysaccharide, a macromolecule.It cannot be absorbed as such by the absorptive cells of the small intestine.Hence it has to be broken down to the units.Glucose, fructose, galactose are three monosaccharides. Starch is made of up of glucose.

Only glucose can be transported through the cell membranes to provide as an energy source for the cells. The transport molecules over the cell membrane are also only specific for glucose.

Starch is broken down to carbs by intestinal enzymes and converted and stored as glycogen in the liver. The glycogen is the stored source of energy.
