Soul mates last for the rest of your life... you're committed to each other because the souls of you 2 (soul = mind, emotions, will) becomes entwined.

Madly in love is more likely emotional and it will cease after awhile.

Soul mate is a term now bandied about like "love" and "commitment". These are terms used (by others) to illustrate the amount of love purported to be in a relationship. A bit cynical, I know.

Madly in love is what we all want but finding one's soul mate is finding that special person where mad love exists in a person that shares one's life's passions and loves life's struggles because he/she is with YOU. That's the person who will grow old with you, share your life and help you overcome all obstacles with a zest for life that makes you wonder, "Gee, how time flies..."
