Tradition. It suppose it stems from St. Nick's practice of leaving gifts in empty containers.

To get more gifts, of course! Just kidding. It's a tradition that started in the 19th century, and I forget what country it was, either England or Germany. Children hung their socks by the fire on a regular basis, to dry them. At Christmastime, however, good children usually got a treat, back then an orange was heaven. Bad children got a lump of coal.
Hope this helps!

we used pillow cases as small children
socks traditionally used and container a lump of coal for luck and usually an orange which was a very expensive and luxury item
socks were probably put in front of the fires to warm or dry for the following day, santa suppose to come down the chimney so I guess someone decided to stuff the pressies in the socks!

Ok this goes back to the St. Nick legend. According to legend St. Nicholas of the Catholic faith was passing by a poor house and dropped some gold coins into the socks of two children. He is the patron saint of children. His birthday is in December and they used to celebrate St. Nick's Day (sounding familiar). Because his day was becoming so important to those around the world, the Catholic Church changed his day to December 25th and made it the Christ Child's birthday, which some believe actually occured in late September. Personally I love the jolly ole elf and one day pray to marry him. lol

because the people that believe in him think that when he comes down the chiminy, he'll first see th stockings then put the presents in first. our family sometimes puts stockings up (for my 7 year old sisters) but we never put anything in the stockings, thinking that nothing would fit, or it will fall.
