I would like to get one of those tests where you have to read texts of decreasing size in order to find out which strength of reading glasses are needed. If possible I would like to find one that can be printed off rather than just veiwed on a screen. If not, does anyone know the normal font types and/or sizes that are used to test near vision in a standardised way?

Thanks very much

Eye tests are FREE in the UK - any optician will do a free eye test. You do not have to buy their spectacles. The eye test is a form of prescription with states the power of the glasses you will need. You can take this to any optician of your choice. An eye test is not just about what you are able to see/read, its also about detecting any sign of glaucoma.

You should really get an eye test from an optician because it's not just about checking whether you need glasses but also checking for signs of disease etc.

It does not cost much (£30 max, free if you are on low income) and it is worth it for your longterm health.

Lots of shops sell inexpensive reading glasses and they have printed cards which you can look at to see what strength glasses you need. But go to optician cos they also check the health of your eyes

most chemists offer this free as an over-the-counter service. There are cards available with script wriiten on them in various type-face sizes. you see which script you can read best and then you can buy the glasses you need at a greatly reduced price.
