The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island, which was called Bedloe Island until it's name was officially changed in 1956. It is a small uninhabited island in Upper New York Bay. It is approximately one mile away from Ellis Island, which formerly served as an immigration entry point into the United States.

If my immigrant Irish grandparents had gotten off the boat at Liberty Island (instead of Ellis), in less than an hour they would have had cabbage boiling in the Statue of Liberty's belly, and laundry hanging from her Flame.
