Hi,

Meta keyword tags (as the first answerer said) are largely irrelevant, there is a lot more to 'Search Engine Optimisation' (or SEO for short) than that.

Basic SEO isn't difficult but there is a lot of knowledge to swallow. Because this question gets asked so much here at Yahoo! Answers, I've written a basic guide to SEO which is freely available for download at http://www.adambunn.co.uk/seo-beginners.php

Sometimes you will get away with the basic knowledge in my little book and sometimes you will need a lot more help from a professional; it all depends on what market you are in.

Good luck!

While important, meta tags such as keywords will not do much for you on most search engines. Having good content and many sites linking to you is the key these days.

Unfortunately, the people who figured out how to keyword spam for top placement on search engines ruined it for the rest of us.

One nice meta tag is the description. Ever notice how on some search engines, site's it finds that do not have a description tag, it will just pull up random stuff off the main page? Put a description tag in there and that is what people will see as the title of your site.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search engines work by trying to display the most relevant results for any given search term. They will rank the pages from what they consider the most relevant to the least relevant using a proprietary algorithm.

Search Engine Optimization is making sure that each page of your website is determined as relevant by the search engine algorithms so that it will appear high in the search results and more users will see it.

Search Engine optimisation is tinkering with your HTML code to ensure that it is picked up more often by search engines.

It does this with the use of Meta headings and keywords.

Keywords are in the meta heading and these terms will be used by the search engine to find the most appropriate page for the searcher. The more keywords that are hit, the higher up your page will be on the list.
