If Everyone were held to the same Standards, it would be a good thing. As long as that is not the case, True free Trade will never Exist. What I would really Like is a [F]air [T]rade [L]abor Provision on all Manufactured Goods. All such Items, TV's, Appliances, Clothes, Tools, Everything would have an F.T.L. Sticker on it. All such Items would be Made in Factories that Conform to a Standard set forth by the U.N. These Factories would be Subject to Periodic Unannounced Inspections. Also, Designated Representatives would Report to the U.N. about Worker Conditions, Wages, Safety, etc. All such Items would have reduced Import Tarriffs to Offset the Increased Costs involved with Compliance. Yes, there would be Abuse of the System. When this is Proven, then the Factory that is in Violation would have it's F.T.L. Product Labeling Privilige Revoked for a Period of Time.I do believe in Free Trade, and Non-F.T.L. Items should continue to be Marketed, with the Educated Consumer making the Ultimate Choice. There is a Reason that DVD Players, TV Sets and Appliances, and so many other Things are so Inexpensive. The Vast Majority of these items are being built in what amounts to Slave Labor Camps, and it's the People in the more Advanced Cultures, economically Speaking, that are getting Rich as a Result ! The Air Pollution and Working Conditions in many of these Factories is Horrible ! When a Worker is severely Injured, or Dies, nothing is done ! This must Change if We are to ever really have a True "Free Trade Market", because what We have Now is "Going to be a Downfall of the Economy" And it is directly Related to the LACK of Unions ! Mr.Bill Clinton, if You really want to do something that will have a Positive Impact on the World Economy, and Environment, and will Truly Benefit all but the Greedy Fat Cats that are getting Rich from Slave Labor in the Third World, and Shut Up Your Critics, then I Challenge You to Push for an enforcable [F]air [T]rade [L]abel Standard that can Work !

While trade is beneficial, unrestricted trade can cause more harm than good. And to answer the second question
Unions have helped establish the basics for human rights (without the standards, slavery would be the norm) The reality is that the best quality, highest value-lowest price items are union made!

unions don't want a global work force. you can hire roughly a jillion third world workers and improve their lives dramatically or hire a handful of union employees who you can;t fire and demand alot.
