a few friends & i have been signing up for sweepstakes drawings for a while, by pch, reader's digest, & etc. Honestly, we never really thought we would win, i guess in alot of ways it was just nice to dream.....ya know. Anyway, last week i got a letter in the mail from some company called SGPI (scientific games processing inc) saying that i had won 50,000. well it was actually sent in August, but the post office was holding some of my mail (said i'd never filled out change of address card when i did in june) and i just got it. it came w/ a check for 2,950 as the first payment. I guess i just got so excited i wasn't really thinking & shouldve checked it out first. Anyway, it said to deposit it in my bank then mail it to them for the taxes. well, i wasn't near my bank at the time so i used the check to pay bill to loan company, & they give me check for change. i called the # (viktor woods) & left message, now i can't get in touch w/ anyone. i am scared it will bounce. what should i do?

P.S. I NEVER SENT THE MONEY BACK TO THEM, BC THE LETTER SAID I HAD UNTIL AUG 25 TO SEND IT OR I WOULD LOSE THE REST OF THE 50000. BY THE WAY, THE LETTER CAME FROM A POST OFFICE BOX IN ST THOMAS VIRGIN ISLANDS.

I hate to tell you this, but you have been scammed. It is most likely a bad check and you are responsible for it. Your bank will not cover a bad check you received and cashed. It's just one of many scams out there ( someone tried to pull the Nigerian advance check scam on me) Two phases I've leaned to live by 1. There is no such thing as a free lunch
2. If it sounds too good to be true, It probably is.
I'm sorry you lost the money, The best you can do is chalk it up to experience

Sorry to say but its a scam. As far as the check goes all you can do is to wait and see is the other boot drops. Any thing that comes out of the Virgin Isl. is a scam. Anytime someone sends you a check and asks to cash and send back the money is a scam. If you were to cash it and send back the money and then the check bounced then you would have to repay the money and the jerk in the Virgins Isl. would be laughing and saying, "those stupid Americans"..... This way if the check bounces now then all you have to make up is that payment you made and NOT have to pay the bank the $2,950..... I hope this is a cheep lesson for you. Save the change that you got back because you may have to return it!!!! Good Luck..

It sounds like a scam to me. If it is a scam your bank will just charge you the fee they charge for returned checks and your account will then be negative the amount you used to pay the bill company.
