Because in the beginning, we all have the chromosomal makeup of females. Until the sperm and egg are united, we are all female my friend. But let's keep that on the hush hush, we don't want the ladies to catch wind of this. :-) Anyways, since we start with the basic blueprint, we have these completely useless nipples.

Because way back in the mists of time we were all the same sex. Other answers here have outlined how males and females are very similar.
If it was a disadvantage for men to have nipples i.e. it resulted in their death or it was unatractive to females, then any men WITHOUT nipples would have been more genetically favourable and they would have taken over the world., meanwhile men WITH Nipples would be socially stigmatised / sterilised and they would die out.
The problem with this is that all men have nipples and it doesn't kill you or stop you reproducing, so it's hasn't been bred out of the population.
So... when the day comes that a bloke is born without nipples, beware! For they may take over the world (but he better be super-fit and extra gorgeously fertile!)

Because humans are mammals.
Humans all start out female in the womb, and female humans are mammals that need mammary glands, so men end up having nipples. The nipples don't develop into full breasts in men, though, because later in pregnancy the male hormones take over to produce male organs.

Some people have hit close to the mark with their answers, but no cigar i'm afraid.
After fertilisation, the embryo devopes as a hermaphrodite, having both female AND MALE phenotypes. It is not until several weeks into the pregnancy that male and female phenotype develops. Up until that point all embryo's have the precousor genitalia and "tubes" including those which go on to form nipples.

Nipples are female characteristics. While in the womb,we're all created on a female 'template'. It is only late in the pregnancy then will our own body go into overdrive to add male body parts. Example:Testicles,Penis and the genetic code to transform boys to men in puberty

they're not nipples. you see, when a guy is born, he is automatically bitten by two mosquitoes in the places that nipples should be.
