Before anyone can answer that question, you need to ask if you know anyone who has a REAL addiction to anything. Basically Drugs and alcohol are the only things I can truly say are not choices. You're right the first time IS a choice, but once you become an ACTUAL Addict it's not a choice. Why do you think addicts go through With drawls? Their bodies in fact start to need that drug/alcohol they're consuming. Accepting the fact that you have and addiction and taking responsibility for it IS a choice!!

Well, sort of and sort of not.

When they first start doing something that they know could be addictive, they have the option to restrain themselves, and by not doing so, they are at fault.

However, if they aren't aware that something is highly addictive, well then its either a case of ignorance by choice or genuine ignorance.

Once they have the addiction, they still have a choice. The choice is between whether they are going to let others help them get out of this addiction, or they are adamantly going to insist that no one can help them. For the latter, they are at fault once again.

But i must admit that it takes a lot of courage and help from friends and families for one to give up an addiction. Sometimes even professional advice.

Here's an excellent article on it: http://www.naturalism.org/addictio1.htm

I've had several people very close to me who have had various addictions. It is truely a choice. To do it or not to do it, no one decides for them. They make the decesion to put the glass, pipe, cigarette, etc... into their mouths. No one died from saying "no". That being said, there are various degrees inside of people that give them their addictive personalities. For example, some people can smoke for years and give it up with no help. Others need more intervention. Some people are just stronger than others. And yes, it does come down to the fact that some people have more self control and will power than others. Doesn't make these people any better, it's just they way personalities go.

I think that people with addictions do have a choice. But, I also do believe that it is somewhat of a disease. We are looking for an outlet, and that outlet can sometimes lead us to an addiction.
If you are asking if people with addictions have a choice to get better, of course. Just like we have a choice to go to the doctor for a bad headache, etc...But, it is up to that person to make that choice. They either A.--decide to get help or B.--decide not to get help.

Given that many older people (from the 60s for example) HAD heavy drug addictions, when they were younger, it stands to reason that a person can and will give it up at some point in their lives...if they live long enough. So yes, they have a choice...unfortunately it usually takes rock bottom, to happen, to make that decision for change.

All people have a choice. Let me tell you something about addiction. To me personally I smoked Crack Cocaine for two years. Addicted????Hardly, I got tired of it one day and just said FK it. That was five years ago. I haven;t touched it since. People have choices and you have to be strong minded and good will power. I did what very few people who ever start smoking Crack can do. It depends all on the indivudual. I don't do any drugs anymore. I came to a clear understanding about my life and especially $30,000.00 less in my bank account to look back on and see how stupid I really was. I help others now to help them rid their addictions.

Yes they do have a choice!! If some one wants to quit their addiction & I mean REALLY wants to quit they can.Its a matter of simply making up their minds that they don't wan't to be tied down with the addiction.Look at all the positives that come with quitting & always remember them, like the good health & all the extra cash etc. They would need to get help especially if it is a serious addiction like some medication.
The secrete is making up your mind to do it & stick to it

Yes. They made the choice when they first started the drug/porn/alcohol/cigarettes, etc

They make the choice every time they engage in the addiction. True, the choice not to do it is extremely difficult, but it can be done.

Yes, I do. I was an addict for 11 years. When I DECIDED to get clean, I got clean. People who blame their addictions on the chemical are copping out. If you really want to beat your addiction, you can.

I think they made the original choice, but once they are truly addicted they don't have a choice.
