I won about 1000 dollars on poker table last weekend at a casino, but I believe in karma! should I use that money to pay my credit card or should I give it to charity?

First rule of personal finance: pay yourself first. Second rule: eliminate your credit card debt - interest rates are obscene. Then make a smaller contribution to charity, and do it consistently over time. Eventually, it could be a $1,000 contribution, but if you don't take care of your own finances, who will?

If you believe in Karma then think about how much money you have lost (or are likely to lose in the future) playing poker, then understand that this windfall is just the cosmic balance restoring itself.

Whilst I encourage everyone who can afford to to give to charity, if you are in debt then you cannot afford to. As such, pay your credit card, get yourself in a strong financial position and then you can give as much as you can afford to charity.

As far as Karma is concerned, it is good to rid your own problems first. If you can pay off the debt with 1000, pay the rest to charity. Don't gamble the rest.

Also:

Remember 3 tips for gambling: Set a limit on: how much you are willing to lose, how much you are willing to win, and how much time you are willing to spend. If you hit a limit, you should stop(which is very hard)

How about $995 for your credit card, and $5 for charity. It's the thought that counts :)

Pay off your credit card - or you will kick yourself later...the winning is karma from something prior - to help you pay off your credit card bill. Don't go against that kind of karma - otherwise you will have to repeat the lesson that you failed to learn...

Please, Immediately, pay your credit card.. I know about Karma and this will do more for your good Karma than anything you could give to charity.... It will also help your sleep, your peace of mind and your sense of well being...

Why not donate half, and save half as a bankroll for future trips? Then repeat the process, giving yourself an every larger bankroll, to shoot for an ever larger prize, so that you can donate more to your favorite charity?

It will pay off more in all ways in the long run.

Get rid of your credit debt. This is one of the biggest problem our economy is facing. Charity is great, but you have to help yourself first.
