i am not clear as to how much is a billion and trillion. some say that in US billion is 10 raised to power 9 whereas in other countries it is 10 raised to power 12. similarly trillion. is it 10 raised to power 15 or 18? is it not confusing if different countries adopt different values for the same thing.

Whatever you might have heard or known could have positively confused you since there were different US and UK conventions being followed in the past. I do agree with your confusions!

However, these days generally at all places 1 billion is 10 raised to power 9 i.e. 1000 millions is 1 billion and 10 raised to power 12 i.e. 1000 billions is 1 Trillion. Hope you follow this clearly and don't get confused any further.

Ok, as UK billion is a million million (10 to the 12)
A US billion is a hundred billion (10 to the 9)

UK 10 to the 18
US 10 to the 12
These are only traditional british values though, they now use the american system.

If you were to spend 1000$ a day, it would take you 2 years & 9 months(1000 days) to spend a million dollars, pounds, whatever.
To spend a billion $, it would take 2739 years and 9 months, a much more difficult task (except for gov'ts of course).
the same holds for a trillion, except you have to spend a million $ a day...

you see the numbers go up by ten:
10
100
1000
10000
100,000
1000, 000 == Million
1000 Million = Billion= 1,000,000,000
1000 Billion = Trillion = 1,000,000,000,000
Hope this makes sense to you, it does to me!
