And no, he wasn't wrong. If the majority of Islam is against terrorism, why won't they speak out against it?

First of all, he didn't "say" it. The pope was quoting from a 14th century emperor. Second, The Pope's intentions were to encourage dialog between religions. If he had actually made accusatory remarks, then yes that would be wrong.

The most disheartening part about his story is that fact that some of the Islamic faith chose to protest and burn his (the Pope's) image in effigy, but you do not see this kind of outrage from them when their own people kill each other. I am talking about the extremists, because YES they are violent people.

Though he didn't accuse those of the Islamic faith of terrorism, he DID bring up the past and parts of the Koran that deal with violence. He showed either a very poor knowledge of politics and/or a desire to stir the pot even more. The world is becoming more and more polarized by "religion", and leaders of religions need to be very careful what they say unless they are trying to cause an even greater chasm.
I find it hard to believe that this pope was a dear friend of our recently departed saintly pope.

edit: The Vatican is a political entity, and, though the pope speaks for the Catholic religion, they (popes, that is) are usually well-versed in politics. I am finding it difficult to believe that the current "Holy Father" did NOT know what sort of hornets' nest he was going to stir up with his remarks. I am wondering about the REAL reason for his remarks, and who his speech writer is working for......

Here is a link to the English translation of the Pope's controversial speech: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/speeches/2006/september/documents/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20060912_university-regensburg_en.html

In my opinion, although what the Pope said was true, he said it in the wrong way to the wrong people.

If you are going to give a constructive criticism to your neighbor (Islam) then you should do it to his face not behind his back.

The Pope's speech used Islam as a bad example of "faith and reason" to a group of Catholics when he probably could have found a better bad example in Catholicism.

Therefore it is appropriate for the Pope to apologize.

With love in Christ.

No, he was wrong for apologizing to the Islamic world for telling the truth.

Here's irony: Everytime someone says that Islam is violent, Muslims protest their innocence by destroying embassies, burning flaqs, chanting hate speech and causing general destruction wherever they may be.

the pope was absolutely wrong for accusing Islams of terrorism and violence. The pope is wrong about a lot of other things too.. i personally dont like the pope and religion in general.

like c'mon now, the pope scolded Canada for the re-definition of marriage and our pro-choice policies.. who could hate Canada? we are just one of the best nations in the world.

He never accused Isam of terrorism. He correctly quoted the Byzantine emperor Manuel Il Paleologus, from a conversation that he (the emperor, not the Pope) had in 1391.

What religion do 99.99% of all terrorists in the world follow? Islam.

Islamic Terrorist are there scattered all over the world - US & other affected countries are chasing them - So both of them are on run -

i feel Pope was not accusing Islam for a bad thing the followers are are doing it. He meaant the preachers should be careful while they contribute during Friday sermons and preaching
should be neutral and shouldn't end up in voilance.

looking at the current world situation and based on the dailyu events I can assess Pope's thoughts as:
Pope was not wrong by 75% and
was wrong by 25%.

He did not accusing Islam of being a form of terrorism. However to the degree that his reference did make a connection the reaction rather proves the point does it not.

The word ' terrorists' have been labelled on a person who is islam and fights for islamic righjts in his own way. Just like those Cubans and colombians who hijack planes and bring terror on other people.
Thanks to Bush (may he burn well in hell), Islam is now considered a religion of terrorists.
I'm Islam and assure you that i'm a peaceful person..... ...as long as I don't meet the devil who may burn well in hell!!!
