there are two ways to act with a conquered country:

1. you can strip it of all its goods, enslave its people and basically use it to send everything that it has good in it to your country and then let it barren. this way in the short term you will gain lots of goods and riches.

2. you can improve its conditions, building, improving the systems, transforming the country in an economical partner rather than a slave. this way in the long term you will gain markets for your products and products for your markets.

the first system was used by people like the turks, the mongols. the french and the spanish while not as bad, were bad enough. and were using this system. the second system was used by greek colonies, romans, english, dutch. that's why the commonwealth still exists today and the queen is, at least nominally, still ruler of half the planet. that's why even if politically england does not rule its former colonies, those countries still have excelent relations with it.

If memory serves, the French mostly wanted to exploit the riches in furs and other resources and France did not encourage its population to settle there.

England on the other hand, wanted its colonists to stay. England got rid of undesirables, religious dissenters and other malcontents by encouraging them to settle in the New World. Also, those who wanted a new life emigrated to the New World. And tobacco was a cash crop for the colonists which England was happy to have, so the colonies became prosperous.

I think the Spanish were similar to the British, but they had smaller colonies in North America - Florida, New Mexico and California.

especially at the beginning, english colonists had religious reasons to move to the new world, and so they really wanted to settle there. spanish, portuguese, french, and dutch had as a main goal to improve their economic conditions and even if after all they stayed, their mentality was not to settle down but to exploit.
