When I was young I was appalled by the statement. But I believe now that what he was saying was that history, as it is written, is bunk.

Yes. A nation or culture writes its history to suit itself, and to indoctrinate its citizens with false patriotism. Military victors write history to support the necessities for their wars.
Religious history is out to prove that someone's religion is truth, etc.,,,

It all amounts to lying. Just as individuals lie to cover their own activities, so do nation states. And even when the lying isn't deliberte, it
's ignorant.

Bunk. Maybe half built in truth, and the rest embellished in BS, the way Hollywood makes its "based on true story" movies.

Histories are accounts from someone's perspective. They do provide necessary information, though. Like the fact that Mr. Ford looked very favorably upon Hitler's rise.
I guess he got a little goosey about races mixing. He was very adept at line manufacturing. I've got to give credit where it's due.

I don't really get the "bunk". It's too dismissive. How would you understand what's happening in the world if we didn't have some idea of what had led to current events?

Sorry to end an answer with a question.
