It may even be a line from "Good Fences Make Good Neighbors." The whole idea is if you respect one another's space, and have a chance to develop as an individual without being crowded by mass culture and peer pressure, you are a better person, and a more productive and creative person.

Personally, in my opinion, the quote means that the great people, and the great things in life, have arisen from not the same background, but such a diverse one. It says that if all were to come from the same place, they would all be the same, and perhaps any mistakes that would be found by other cultures, would not be detected. But as this states, when all people are unique, they form many different opinions which is what has shaped our world today.

It seems to me that he might have been referring to a couple of things...
1) People tend to perceive themselves as separate beings - separate from each other; separate from their creator. These tend to be limiting beliefs. So that "...rising out of their separateness" could be referring to their growing out of their (original) belief system. this is not an "easy" thing to do in life, as most are influenced by their peers, and traditional belief systems that reinforce the old beliefs. Therefore, it would take the "best" to move out of this.
or 2) The best "things" and best "people" are meant to be together thru the law of attraction. and since people may at first be separated from the "best" they could have or aspire to, they must first "rise up" to their potential (their "best"), so as to attract these "best things" to themselves.

Separateness means Isolation.
Only when u r isolated by others, you'll have the urge to succeed and out of the isolation you' ll turn out to be better and bring out the best in you - an act of jus proving yourself and justifying what you have done is right.

means to me that the things which are best and the people that are best ARE the best because they are separate from the masses of things and persons. that is, because they are individualistically better (actually "the best"), they rise above all the others.
make sense?

it means that the things that unite us are greater and more important than the things that divide us. when people get over their differences they are able to work together towards contributing to the greater good.
