It was really to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but still to be close enough to get back either for work commitment or to visit friends and family. Further to that parts of the South coast are really nice and compared to some of the London living conditions a real relief. However the South coast, especially in Sussex, Kent and Hants are getting ridiculously expensive and too full of self important tossers. So, moving to the coast isn't what it might have been.
