My fiance is in the army. Hes coming back on oct.21 and we plan to get married 3 days after that. Hes going to be here for 10 days, or 24 days. We are leaving to Germany (thats where he is going to be stationed). Now my question is, I need to get a passaport but it takes 4 to 6 weeks to come in the mail and if i want an emergency passaport i need to pay about $300. Can I get my passaport now even though my name is going to change in a couple of weeks?

You will also have paper work for the Army that must be done and approved so you can travel free. If not it will cost $600 to $1200 to fly to Germany. You will need a passport to travel to Germany. If you have to go later there are a couple of airlines that are usually the cheapest to fly and they would be Icelandair, US Air and now British Air. Icelandair only flys out of four cities in the USA-- Boston, Baltimore, Minneapolis and San Francisco. United, Delta and Northwest are also possible. Where you are flying from in the USA makes a big difference in which airline you should fly. My wife and I have flown to Germany on United, Delta, Iceland Air and US Air. The cost I am quoting are from the Washing DC area. I have flown for as little as $400 but that is rare. Most of the time it has cost us $650--$800. Also the Army web site information on Germany is great. The site gives you pratical everyday information about everything German. One example I can give you is that the Germany do not usually say thank you if you hold a door open for them in a public place. They are not a warm and fuzzy people in general. They tend to be reserved and polite and will only be out going after they get to know you. My daughter in law is German so I took a little time before we knew how to act around her.

Emergency passport????? If you have never had a passport, the requirments are: A certified birth certificate, a valid drivers licence or ID card or Military ID, plus a completed passport application (download and print this off the computer, google search for passport application) and 2-2X2 photos. Walgreens can do the photos for you.

The charge for a passport is $97. It is true that this could take up to 8 weeks to process. You can pay to have this process expidited. It is an additional $60. It is supposed to have a maximum time of 3-5 business days in their office for processing with this service. You can also have the application overnighted to them and pay to have them overnight it back to you to speed it up even more. You can take the application, birth certificate, ID, photos..etc, to the post office or county court house to have them send it off for you.

Best of luck and enjoy Germany. I was born there (army brat) and have always wanted to visit again.

If you can wait til you get married to get the passport, the Army will pay for it. Once you are married he will have to get you put on his orders as a dependent. Then they will pay for your airfare and ship your household goods as well.
