Horror -- I'd choose the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton. It's got it all; blood sex and magic. I've read them all and they are fantastic.
Romance -- I'd choose the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. The series is so funny and it's under the 'mystery' aisle, but Janet's roots are in romance so I think it fits.
General Fiction? That's a little vague. I guess I'd point you to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. Or To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Or even M*A*S*H by Richard Hooker. Egads, I could list ten more without batting an eye.
Some great books out there! Let's get reading!
