I have MX, and have used 8, theres subtle differences but in one year its usually not enough to worry about.
especially in design software, like theres very miniature differences between Adobe CS and CS2

I figure MX is newer, so if you have 8 it will teach about the same stuff as 8 plus the new stuff (which you can ignore), but then again, i generally prefer the online help included with the software or trial and error rather than tutorial books

8 is more recent, would have different effective aspects yet i have not used it yet. if you're only searching for something to play with, there is not any longer something incorrect with MX, I truly have it and that i like it.
