Actually Shakespeare adapted his play from The Tragicall History of Romeus and Juliet, by Arthur Brooke.
The earliest known version is Giulietta e Romeo by Luigi da Porto, but even that is based on an earlier work by Masuccio Salernitano about a tragic couple called Mariotto and Gianozza.

William Shakespeare is the auther of Romeo and Juliet. I had nefphue age 5 to ask if he also wrote the Bible.. Yes he was reading the book of Shakespeare and the Bible at age 5.

Well comtemporary culture attriubutes many of the plays written in the style and time period of Romeo and Juliet to Skakespeare...
BUt now scholars are begining to examine more this more closely....Many belive the works of Shakespeare were written by many different people all collaborating....
