So what is free speech? This definition is not easy to establish. I think this issue will become more important now due to the technology of today. I believe both parties have done censorship. Depending on the political environment , we hear only about certain types of censorship. But our founding fathers intended this to be the #1 right.
Ask your self this question. If someone lies about a person, is this within their right of free speech? Does this conflict with the person's rights who was lied about ?
For example, if Howard Stern says something bad on the radio and he is fined, some believe this is censorship.
What people have to rememeber is no right can infringe on another right. So, if Stern says this on the radio which uses a satelite and antenni that has been paid for by the tax payer, than this is considered public and falls under the FCC's juristiction. Since the FCC leadership are nominated and choosen by government, we have control over the FCC by voting.
But regardless the courts have ruled against persons like Stern based on "no right can conflict with another". Whatever Howard Stern says is in his right, but if what he said violates someones elses rights, like religion, he is in violation of that right.
This is not really enforced unless fulgar words are used. The problem is that what is right and wrong is so open to interpretaion..
Remember a radio station does not own the Air Waves it uses they are merely borrowing those air waves from the tax payer.
It seems that we have strayed in many ways from the constitution. There are just too many rules to follow. This is why I asked the question "What is free speech?"
Because of all the rules and regulations, free speech is no longer simple.

The censorship is put into place because people are missing the point of the First Amendment. I think that, yes, you can say whatever you want. To whomever you please. But use your head and think before you open your mouth. Use some common sense and quit abusing the rights that the founders of this country provide to you.
By the way I am not Republican, nor Democrat for that matter. I read both sides of an issue and decide after I understand what is going on. I am just as guilty as the next for making crass judgments, but I never forget that we live in a country that allows me to do that. Think before you speak, and be able to back up your opinions.

censorship only means the gov't prevents someone from publishing something.
If a writer has something published and the publisher then recalls those books for commercial reasons (too much controversy) that is not censorship.
If the FCC fines a tv network for showing something indecent that is not censorship either. The indecent show was broadcast.
If networks decide not to show something They think will bring a fine, that isn't censorship.
What censorship are you talking about?
Remember a few weeks ago, the New York Times published a story about the gov't snooping into financial trasnactions and networks? The publisher of the paper met with the Pres. Bush ASKED NYT not to publish the story. NYT ran the story anyway. No one went to jail. Where is there censorship?

I have no idea where you got your information from, but it is the democrats that continually try to censor free speech. Please list some direct instances of what you are talking about. It is not a good thing when and if anyone tries to deny any part of the constitution to any person.

is that why the industry caved in to censor the recent show regading 911. Who was the censor?
You make a loaded question with nothing to back it up, go get an education then ask something worthwhile.

There is no such feeling that it is okay to censor, but rather an understanding that a person should be resposnible and accountable for what they say.

Because we hate sexist, moronic pigs like Howard Stern.
We have values and morals, and we want America to be a clean place.

They aren't really big on civil rights. I mean, they don't like free speech, and they think that the right to privacy is very "nothing". They will tap your phone and search your records to find out if you are a terrorist. . . All without a warrant. Isn't that convenient???
