Basically my old computer was dead and only the hard drive survived. A repair guy turned it into an external drive. Now I have a new computer (both the new and old are Dell laptops, Windows XP). How do I transfer everything over? I've got it hooked up with the USB, but now what?

EDIT:

So basically there's no way to do it all in one motion? I have to copy music over to the music folder, then the pictures into the pictures folder, etc etc? Does this work the same for things internet favorites? I'm just trying to think what all I'll need. And after that, should I just delete the rest of everything off the external so I can use it as a back up?

Now XP should have auto-detected the external drive. You can open it up from My Computer, and then start cutting and pasting files from the external drive to your local drive (usually C:). Tip: Select all files by hitting Ctrl+A (this is probably what you want to do in order to get everything from the external drive to the internal drive), multiple files by holding down Ctrl and single-clicking the files, or you can just drag around the files you want to select.

Once hooked up, you should be able to see the HDD after XP "recognised" the HDD.

Subsequently, you will have to "copy & paste" or "cut & paste" into the respective folder you would want the data to be present.

Note that only the data may be copy over not the program(s).

Program(s) have to be re-installed...

PS: If your OLD HDD folders are "made private" or encrypted, then you'll need help from tech or geek who knows how to access them....

gd luck
