Wearing a helmet to skydive is mandatory in uk - in some countries, it is less strictly enforced but most skydivers / parachutists would wear one anyway. Collision with the aircraft is possible as you jump from it, collision with another skydiver is possible in free fall, collision with another parachutist is possible whilst you are under your parachute, and collision with something hard (for example, a building, a tree or the ground) is possible if you get your landing pattern wrong. A fast or heavy landing can mean the parachutist falling over and banging his / her head. Personally, i only needed a helmet's protection three or four times in four thousand jumps, but you only need its protection once to make it worth wearing the rest of the time. Additionally, in winter, it gets very cold at altitude and everybody wears head gear then.

The helmet is for BEFORE the parachut opens. If you were knocked unconsious by a colision with the plane, another skydiver or a passing bird you wouldn't be able to open your chute.

Same reason Football players, motorcycle riders, racecar drivers,
Construction workers and a lot of other people wear helmets..
To protect their heads ...
Most parachute injuries do not involve catastrophic chute failure..
Lots of folks just fall into trees....
How about a tree limb through your eyeball ??

Landing with a parachute on is like jumping out of a car going about 40Km/h or 20mph... it's easy to trip over and crack your head on something.

No, skydivers have had chutes fail to open, or not open properly and survived. Another issue is mid-air collisions with other divers.
