I think you have a point. Some Asian countries have suggested that the umbrella term 'democracy' should be used in a less prescriptive and more descriptive way, so that certain groups within developed countries will stop saying "there is only one kind of democracy... and that's the one we practice".
Maybe they are too polite to point out that the kind of 'democracies' held up as shining examples are often superficial, and don't stand up to close scrutiny as such.
Time to do some learning rather than preaching?

The basis for democracy in this country was defined by John Locke and to a lesser degree Thomas Hobbes. It was their theories on the social contract between the ruling class and the general public from which our Constitution and prevailing philosophy has been derived over the last 300 years with a few poignant exceptions.
Their observations are still the primary curriculum taught to poly-sci and philo students in Amercian accadamia. Therefore it is their translation of Decomracy which will persist for generations to come.
Also I feel your question is more of a statement concealed.

We aren't a Democracy, and I hope we never become one! We are a Representative Republic!
I would not want this country run by Majority Rule, and neither did our forefathers!
The only good thing that could have come out of it was George Bush would have lost the election!

if it were true that there was really just one party AND if it were true that the media was ownd by republicans and was trying to brainwash me,
how does that affect the concept of democracy or my freedom to choose
I can run for office and I can vote for me
you can do the same
there are always many people on the presidential ballots besides republicans and democrats and you can vote for them, and many times, you can write in someone else if you want
stop whining
you don't have to watch any media if you don't want
you don't have to vote for any republicans or democrats if you don't want
you live in the free-est most democratic land on earth
get some use out of it
