I just purchased an iPod and and am disappointed by the lack of instructions! How long does the initial charge take? I plugged it into my computer and there is simply a dark screen with "do not disconnect." I have no idea if it is charging. Should there be some sort of moving indicator letting me know that it is charging?

Initial charge does take a long time. I have the video iPod and I think mine took about 4 hrs. Yours should take a little less than that, but still may be a while. My screen says "do not disconnect" too when I charge it. Just leave it in overnight -- that way you won't notice how long it's taking, and it will be charged fully in the morning.

Congrats on your purchase, I hope you enjoy it!

And yes, the lack of instructions is annoying. And trying to use the online help is a pain!

Edited to add: The answerer below me, Scott, is correct! You should make sure you've installed iTunes first. I assumed you did, but his point is well taken!

There is a charging symbol of a battery with a lightning bolt in it that flashes when it is charging. The do not disconnect is about the library updating your iPod. That's not the charging indicator. But yes, the instructions are incredibly spartan. You should check out an Apple Store for really help.

The directions are not easy to follow, I agree. Look up in the right hand corner of the screen to the green battery icon. A solid color battery indicates a full charge. As the iPod battery drains, the battery icon's appearance will follow suit.

It says that while it's trying to sync with itunes on your computer. It's definitely charging, but the "do not disconnect" warning is because it's trying to sync. If you haven't installed itunes yet, do that before you do anything else with the nano.
