The problem between Russia and Georgia is not oil, it's political power and control. Russia is never far removed from her history, so never lose site of the fact that Russia controlled Georgia for several centuries and the Czars fought for control of those lands long before oil was a valued commodity.

Oil is just the modern manifestation of control of the economy and the exertion of influence over it's former Imperial empire and hegemony of the Soviet Union. Without a reliable and steady stream of petroleum to feed industry and consumer needs modern economies will grind to a halt. In this case Russia is exercising power over one of its key resources in order to manipulate political power.

I have attached a Wikipedia related article regarding the natural gas dispute between Russia and Georgia. I will add that with the elevated energy costs over the last couple years, there has been a greater effort from leaders, including Putin, to consolidate the increasingly valuable resources under the control of their government. (Russian government only holds a roughly 38% stake in the company, but it does effectively control its Board of Directors) Why does Russian government care? Gazprom provides 25% of Russian tax revenues.
