he sits right in front of me in homeroom and he always smiles at me, tries to make me laugh, and talks to me every chance he gets. does he like me or is he just "playing the game"?

well, it seems like he tries to talk and make me laugh every chance he gets, , like if i'm putting my books awat he'll be like " those books must be really heavy for you" (as he said today)

Well this depends it would seem so but here is some advice ask one of ur friends that isn't to close to u but would do u a favor and ask her 2 pretend that u 2 hate each other and then she goes over to him and starts talking a bunch of crap bout u if he defends u he likes u if not forget him.

ask him... Just say it while smiling and make a joke out of it. If he likes you, he will say "Yeah, maybe I do?" if he's just playing with you he'll say, "Ahhh, I'm just playing with you"...
Say this... "Joey, do you like me or are you just playing with me? HEee Hee!!!"
