X2-10x+25-36y The X2 is x squared. I have the answer and the problem but can't figure it out. If someone can guide me through it,that would be helpful :)

I do appreciate all the help. The answer my book gives is (x+6y-5)(x-6y-5)

I kept getting the same answers everyone here is giving me though. This is a rough problem.

Oh, I gave the problem wrong :( That's why. It's

x^2-10x+25-36y^2

x^2-10x+25-36y^2
=(x-5)^2-36y^2
=(x-5)^2-(6y)^2
=((x-5)-(6y))*((x-5)+(6y))
=(x-6y-5)(x+6y-5)

I think this problem is trying to test your skills in "completing the square." If you have x^2-10x, you would complete the square by taking half of "10" from 10x (which is 5) and then square the 5, which is 25. So knowing that the squared number is 5, you know that 5 should be within your factored problem, in this case, it is (x-5)^2... and then -36y which is somewhat irrelevant in this problem.

let the entire line = 0

X2-10x+25-36y = 0

seperate y and x

36y = X2-10x+25

split the "-10x" to "-5x -5x" to get

36y=x2 - 5x -5x + 25

factor out x from the first 2 terms and -5 from the last 2 terms

36y=x(x -5) - 5(x - 5)

now factor out (x - 5) to get

36y =(x - 5)(x - 5)

now

y = (x - 5)2 / 36

or

y = ((x-5)/6)2

x^2 - 10x + 25 - 36y

x^2- 5x - 5x + 25 - 36y

x(x-5) - 5(x-5) - 36y

(x-5)^2 - 36y
