That's the normal price for that instrument.

Part of that price is materials and craftsmanship. Part of it is the name. Buying the name means you're buying into what many consider to be an American legend. When you play one on stage people will see it and go, "man...that's a Gibson Les Paul."

Part of buying into the name is buying the quality control. For years you could pick up a Gibson instrument and know you were getting something good before you even started to play it. I can't say the same thing for Epiphones, which have always been hit or miss with me.

A rule of thumb for me has been this: If you can't tell the difference, then why pay the difference. The Agile guitars at www.rondomusic.net are supposed to be great copies. Also, Les Paul copies from the 1970s from brands like Tokai, Greco, Burny and Ibanez were supposed to be stellar. Many players can't tell the difference between those and a Gibson, or the don't think it's a $1000+ difference between the two.

you can find better prices on ebay... but you end up paying for the designer label. Yes, the les paul has a few nicer features then say an epiphone, but mostly you are paying for that designer label. Its a GREAT guitar though.

it all depends on the luthier, the wood and the the hardware. the better on all 3 the more expensive it is. if you only have 1 piece of wood form top to bottom and 1 master luthier making the entire piece it's going to be pricey.
