This is a tough question. At first, you think that they are too young, they might get hurt, or they might get scarred, so you decide to let them get older before your going to leave them, then you realize they are teenagers that you aren't about to leave at home alone because you can't trust them! lol. But seriously, you won't believe this but I called CPS when my son was in elementary school and asked them and they told me "Five years old is the youngest and that's if they aren't prone to start a fire"...I couldn't believe they said five years old to be left at home alone...to me that's wayyyyy too young!

Hi
My parents left me alone for a whole day from about 10-11 yrs old. And, I had chores to do that had to be done by the time they came home...ie clean the house. I was good though...did what they asked, and then went to play with friends. I reckon that's an ok age to leave the child alone, if the kid is responsible. By 13 or so, it should definitely be ok, as long as you can trust the kid. And, if you start them off earlier, by the time teen years come around, maybe they'll be more mature and trustworthy. My boss won't leave her 14 year old daughter alone for even an hour, and this girl is so tall and looks so much older than 14...def not a kid! I think it's crazy and makes my boss's life difficult with work commitments and all.

Really depend s on the child and how mature they are. Some kids of 10 are able to be left alone for short periods, maybe whilst you go the shops for a few hours, but some10yr olds just arent ready for the responsibility.
A good litmus test is to ask the child if they are happy to be left alone for an hour, then when u get back ask how they coped etc. It teaches them independence, but u must always make sure they know wat to do in an emergency. Not to answer the door to strangers etc
I used to be left alone for whole days and nights with my two year old brother when I was 8, luckily nothing bad ever happened, but I didnt enjoy the responsibility.

Well, I wouldn't leave a child alone until he or she is at least 10 years and I have no choice but, it all depends on the child and how long you plan to be out of the house or apt. Your child must know about safety and how and when to answer or not to answer the phone or door. Never let them say you are not home but, you are not able to answer at that time and to leave a message.

Depends on the maturity level. i think I was left alone at home for the first time at 14 or 15. the most important thing though is that they are responsible and mature enough to stay home and that they know all the emergency numbers and different possible scenarios.

Just make sure you say, "Oh, and one last thing, if he cries, don't get upset and shake him. It can harm a little baby."
