By affirming that "I am the teacher and you are the students".....or by being very authoritative .... what impression is the teacher displaying to her students? Is negative or positive or is it both?

It could be seen as Both, in order for students to learn just simple respect sometimes it must be in a authoritative fashion(which students may see as Negative). Some parents feel this is wrong but when their child turns 17, and breaks the law. A judge will see it as black and white. But a Teacher need to relax and at times be a friend and not as strict but still the adult to provide help.

Not enough detail to answer easily. Being the teacher means assuming responsibility. Try explaining that to the students and probably most won't understand well. Hopefully the teacher realizes that though and doesn't just want power. That line might have been better explained in class than you assumed after hearing from your child, but who knows?

There is a place for it, and you need a little bit of it to manage your classroom. Students need to know that you are in control, you will make sure that they are safe and that they are learning in your classroom at all times. But they also need to know that you value their input and care about their individual needs and interests.

I hate that as a teacher. I don't want them not to respect me, but I want to treat them as partners. That usually makes them more mature.
