Apple juice, applesauce, and gerber sells prune baby food. It work like a charm!! Good luck!! Remember too, oatmeal & applesauce loosen so give him more of those, but bananas and rice bind so you want to stay away from them!! Good Luck!!

My 3 month old infant has had the same problem. My doctors & nurses advised the following:
1. a warm sitz bath. stimulate the anus with a lubricated rectal thermometer or with a cotton ball with petroleum jelly (the first didn't go over well with my little guy).
2. a little prune juice (just an ounce or so, either by itself or in formula will work wonders.
3. if you are like the rest of us and don't have prune juice, try apple juice. i use 3 ounces (i was told 1 ounce per each month they are old, but 7 ounces seems to be wasteful in the calorie category).
If you do use the juice, make sure that it is 100% juice.
My son gets the warm bath every other day - for approximately 25 minutes (keep running warm water so that it stimulates the anus and bowels) - and he gets 2-3 ounces of apple juice daily. We haven't had a problem in well over a month - unless of course we forget the apple juice for a day or two.
Good luck!

I would not worry just yet. If she is not seeming to be in pain or is not having hard pellet like stool then she may not be constipated. The solids build up a more firm stool. Give her another day or two. If nothing else seems to work (such as prune juice or diluted apple juice) you can get glycerine suppositories at Walmart. Kind of gross, but they work. In the mean time, try giving stage 1 prunes or applesauce. Keep the formula/breast milk coming. If she hasn't had a good bowel movement by Monday, then give her pediatrician a call.

My son has been constipated since birth due to a high calorie formula. We had been using Dark Karo Syrup in his bottles until recently. Karo Syrup can cause Botchilism.(rare food poisoning) We were instructed by a dietician from the local childrens hospital to use glycerin stool softeners. They can be bought over the counter and just instered in the anus with a little k-y jelly. Within about 15 minutes have a diaper and lots of wipes handy!!
Good luck!

I had the same problem with my daughter (it was horrible) and took her to 5 GP's before taking her to a paediatrician. The paediatrician informed me that all the advice I had been given by the GP's was wrong (and none of it worked anyway), and some of them could have even killed her, because babies are very different than adults. He said that this is a very serious problem that needs to be dealt with because they can get in a cycle of holding it for too long because it's painful, and then it being more painful because they've held it too long. What he recommended was a tablespoon of mineral oil mixed in with either pudding or ice cream (because it's oil based), twice a day. Don't put it in any kind of liquid because it floats and they can accidently suck it into their lungs. I had this problem with my daughter for months and it was horrible. This solved it in about a week.

Go to your nearest drug storeand or walmart etc.. and buy some baby suppositories read the directions on the box it will explain how to give them. You can try putting 1 or 2 teaspoons of light kayro syrup in with his formula or breast milk, you can mix a little bit of dish liguid with water and put it in a syring (like the ones you clean out the baby's nose with) and insert it in his rectum, you could give him apple juice, you could give him prune juice. If none of these things work then you better call his dr. there may be something that you are feeding him that is making him constipated. good luck

If you have a chemist in the area either ring them or go there and ask the pharmacist what you can use for constipation, but im sure you can get Coloxyl drops that you mix in milk a few times a day and that should help. Good luck

I would call the baby's doctor or hospital since some medicines could danger the baby. However, if you're son is on solid foods already then you can try giving him some prunes. Usually that will help to soften and ease things along. But no matter what I would still talk to the doctor.
