Can they legally garnish our salaries?

Not unless there is an agreement or work contract making you responsible for work equipment.

Did you break the golf cart, by the way? Was it during hijinks that had nothing to do with work? If these both are true, then he may be within his rights as a citizen to charge you for damage, and might get away with it in court if you take him there.

Sounds like you need a new job, in any case.

The legality of this depends on the laws in your state. Ethically, your employer is pushing the cost of doing business onto you. If there was a serious infraction which caused the cart to be damaged, then hi recourse is to terminate the person responsible. If I were you I would wait to see what he does, and then file a wage claim if he does garnish your wages. But to be sure, be ready to get terminated, the file for unemployment. You will collect if he fires you after filing for unpaid wages; hell, you get it even if he accuses you of damaging the golf cart. He is really in a no win for him.

It would depend if you have a work contract with them. If you do and it states you are responsible for damages to company property then yes. If not, I would have to say no, it is not legal. You will want to contact the Labor Board and perhaps an attorney.
