I was wondering if there was a reason that males and females carry their books differently. When you answer, please include the following:
1. Male or Female
2. Stage of schooling (elementry, middle, high, college)
3. Explain how you carry books.
4. Explain why.
Thank you for answering my question. Please do not give me personal data. I am doing this survey for a sociology class, so please be honest.

The simple answer would be musculature.
But the reason we carry it the way we carry it is the reason you were assigned it from sociology.
Males are simple creatures. Their method of carry is simple; off to the side to enable response to any external threat.
Society still firmly molds girls. Girls are ever so subtly persuaded to ascribe to an ideal of perfection that can never be attained in an imperfect world; this is one of the several checks that keep girls in line. Consequently, girls gain a self-conciousness... that cause them to carry their books ACROSS their body.

Female.
Out of school altogether.
The way you always see girls carrying books on tv
Girls don't have very strong arms. If they set the books on their forearm the traditional girl/book way they get to use their forearm as a shelf and their upperbody as the thing that stops the books from falling off the "shelf".
I don't think it has anything to do with hips. It is entirely possible for a girl to carry books the "traditional boy way", but if they do that its their lower arms that feel the strain. There's no strain at all by using the forearm-as-shelf method.
Especially in school-aged girls there isn't usually the strength in their arms to carry a whole stack of books by using their arms as the main source of support.

I carry my books the way you would carry a child in the front. Sometimes if it's light I'll carry it by the handle. Today just to try something different I carried it on my back. I have a book bag.
I suppose I do it to as a habit.

Yes we do carry them differently. Men normally
carry them in them in one arm like as if they are carrying a folded newspaper (can't think of a better way to explain it.)
Women tend to cradle them as if carrying a baby. Men have stronger hands/arms/shoulders while women...uhm...?
guess they hold em near their hips & chest?
Male
post BA College
Backpack mostly-it's easier as I used to wear a heavy Nikon F2 camera around me neck & wanted my hands free.
or
grasp them in my hand like carrying a folded newspaper. Why-when you only had a few books & it was hot weather.

In 7th, 8th grade, the boys used to smash our books into our boobs if we carried them in front of the chest, so in my middle school no girl carried them that way!

Male, High-School, I put my largest books on bottom, then go to notebooks, then go to my pencil case, and I hold them w/ my right arm, w/ the pencil case facing away from my body.
