I have the European windmill palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) growing in a sheltered spot in Kentucky. I'm also trying some saw palmettos this year.

Another neat thing to grow is the winter hardy banana tree (musa basjoo). I just cut it down after we have a freeze in the fall. It comes back up every spring and multiplies. It gets 10 or more feet tall each summer.

Good luck!
