Recently in the news an art teacher in a school, who has been teaching for 19 years was arrested for possession of meth. It was found on a mirror and magic marker in her desk at school. So far the school board of that school has suspended her WITH PAY, what do you think that this is teaching our children? I mean good grief! It makes me so angry that not only is she using meth at school but she is now on what I would consider to be a paid vacation!

Teachers have the same civil liberties that everyone else does, and they should not have to submit to invasions of privacy any more than other citizens do. Also, the reason she was suspended with pay is because in this country people are innocent until proven guilty. If they did not pay her and she was found "not guilty" by a court, the school would have a lawsuit on their hands for her lost wages, defamation of character and anything else she would want to conjure up.

Teachers are stepped on because they are not considered politically powerful. Watch the kinds of things others do, including police, without getting suspended or charged ("not enough evidence", "benefit of the doubt", "under internal investigation, we assure you").

Let's see. Teachers already have to go through far more than just about anyone else, often even having to pay for their own fingerprints to be taken (no one else I know of, including those charged with felonies have to pay for them), and now you want mandatory drug screenings? Um, how about you volunteer to take them to set an example?

What I think it teaches the children is that when they put meth on a teacher's mirror and magic marker in her desk at school, she might get suspended but they will probably not prevent her from getting her pay to take care of her poor children.

It is called a "union" most teachers unions believe and support the "right to privacy". For me, I would take the test anytime regardless I have nothing to hide, but for others the question becomes "where are they going to stop?" If you are going to drug test them, then you should also monitor their internet time and usage at home as well to ensure further safety from pedafiles. The list can go on and on and on............... Drug tests are the first step to taking away the trust that we hold for our teacher whom we trust to develop the youth. As for the suspended with pay, that is a union gig as well. I do know that most (not all) district do require drug screenings prior to hiring. Beyond that comes the issues of trust. For the thousands of men and women that work in education you are always bound to have a few bad apples in the patch.

I would think some school districts might have different policies. I agree this is bad.

I think suspension with pay is probably a reasonable precursor to dismissal once her case has been investigated. If they suspended her without pay it would strengthen an appeal she might make.

I agree 100% with your details, but your question leaves much to be desired. "Why doesn't teacher's"? Should be "Why don't teachers". I hope you're not one.
