There's a listening part. What I would like to know is... What is the best way to distinguish between instruments that sound so similar to the untrained ear? (i.e.MY Ears.) The instruments are Bassoon, Clarinet, and Oboe. They sound the same to me especially the oboe and bassoon. Answers that would help to tell the difference with other musical instruments would help as well.

Thinking of timbre may help. Timbre is tone color or the emotion that a tone conveys.Timbre is conveyed by the style of music and the message of the artist of course but it is also conveyed by instrument choice. The tone of each instrument has a unique timbre. You tell the difference by the shape of the instrument. Some instruments are conical, that is, they start out small at the mouth piece and get gradually larger toward the bell. Other instruments are cylindrical, that is, the tube of the instrument is the same diameter throughout, right up to the bell. If an instrument is conical is has a warmer, darker timbre. Cylindrical instruments have a cooler, brighter timbre. So when you are listening, close your eyes and think: cooler or warmer, darker or brighter? Some conical instruments include French Horn, Saxophone, Baritone, bassoon. Some cylindrical instrument include flute, trumpet, clarinet, and oboe. Also, smaller instruments are higher. So clarinet is higher than oboe, which is higher than bassoon.

well the oboe is higher than the bassoon for the most part...and the clarinet has a much cleaner/clearer sound to it then the oboe...the oboe can tend to sound dissonant (harsh sounding and somewhat out of harmony)

Oboe is definetly the highest sounding note, it often sounds like a squelling duck.

A basson is lower than a oboe and is in the middle of the clarinet and oboe.

Clarinet has this funny sound to it, it almost sounds as though you are blowing air into a bottle.

Hope this helps. =)

Is it Music Appreation? I hated that class. Well, one thing, oboe is a wee bit, yes I just said a wee bit, flat. Or not so pretty sounding.

Look up some wav files on the internet and listen to them before your test. We can't really describe sounds here.
