SUPPER:
1. A light evening meal when dinner is taken at midday.
2. A light meal eaten before going to bed.
DINNER:
1.the main meal of the day, eaten in the evening or at midday.
2.a formal meal in honor of some person or occasion.
Terms:
The word dinner comes from the french word diner, which means the chief meal of the day. Dinner can also mean a more sophisticated meal like a banquet. The word comes from the latin disiunare, which means to break fast (like in the english word breakfast).
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, supper was originally a light meal eaten just before bedtime. This meaning is still retained for the case of an "after-theatre supper"

Root word of supper is actually soup.
Root word of dinner is dine.
Which word used for which meal is regional. I am from Texas and supper has always been the same as dinner, but I know other areas call lunch dinner or supper, so who knows?
Here's the taters, where's the meat?
Come on folks it's time ta eat!

Well, I'm not sure what it means in the context of typical American culture, but I spend about six months in Australia, and there definitely was a difference. The meals of the day went like this:
Breakfast
Morning tea (light snack)
Lunch
Afternoon tea (another light snack)
Dinner
Supper (another light snack, usually around 9 pm).
So I'm not sure if that helps, but now every time someone says "supper", I'm thinking of before-bed munchies!

Both words mean the same. I prefer to say ''supper'' instead of ''dinner''. People call me old fashioned because of this, but I don't see how I could be!

To sup -- to eat an evening meal
To dine -- to eat
sup-->supper-the meal you sup
dine-->dinner-the meal you eat when dining usually the evening meal since it also once, and still can, imply some sort of other activity/entertainment with the eating like dinner theater, or dinner party where the host/hostess "entertains" guests.
Just a variation of the same thing.

My grandfather used dinner to refer to the noon meal and supper to refer the evening meal. Most people, myself included, use dinner and supper as interchangable words to refer to the evening meal.
