x+y=58
y=4+2x

Subtract second equation from first equation.
x+y-y=58-(4+2x)
x=58-4-2x
3x=54 (added 2x to both sides and did a subtraction)
x=54/3=18

x+y=58 so
18+y=58
y=40

Check to see if these numbers work in other equation:
y=4+2x
40=4+2*18?
40=4+36?
40=40? check

The first is 18 and the second is 40.

a+(4+2a) = 58
a+4+2a = 58
4+3a = 58
3a =58-4
3a = 54
a = 18 and

(4+2a)
[4+ 2(18)]
4+ 36
40

18 and 40!
